Holidaying in Coniston

by Don

Of all of the villages you could choose to stay in in the Lake District, Coniston should be one that is given highest consideration. Coniston is a beautiful spot in itself, but its location really marks it out. It is within shooting distance of Lake Windermere, and Ambleside, and it nestles beneath the dramatic and beautiful Coniston Old Man fell. This enchanting village is one of the most welcoming in the Lake District ans it is well used to visitors having been a tourist spot for decades. Despite the influx of visitors during the summer months, Coniston certainly remains unspoilt.

One of the highlights of the village is of course Coniston water, which is famously the setting for Swallows and Amazons, the wonderful children’s book. The Water is regularly patrolled by a delightful old Victorian Steam Ship which goes by the name of Gondola, and you can travel up and down on this wonderful old vessel throughout the summer months. You are also able to hire other water going apparatus such as rowing boats, electric boats and kayaks from the Coniston Boating Centre.

Coniston is a delightful little village, and at times it can be difficult to find coniston cottages which are available to rent, but an early search online before the season really starts should see you find something that is available. You will find that places book up quickly, but if you search for available accommodation a couple of months prior to your trip, you should be able to find something to suit you.
